KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The 24th annual Hy-Vee Golf Scramble s Variety KC, a local charity focusing on ensuring children with disabilities have the equipment they need to be active, social and belong. Five accessibility bikes were given to Variety KC families Thursday morning, and one of those recipients was 3-year-old Ellis Wilson.

“It’s just going to build so much of his strength and everything like that,” Ellis’ mom, Jessica, said. “We are so grateful and excited.”

Alongside Hy-Vee and many other community sponsors, including the Kansas City Chiefs, those with Variety KC say the day was incredibly important.

“All of our grants come through donations and the generosity of people in our community,” community liaison officer Ali O’Grady said. “So today we’re going to be going ahead and giving five kiddos adaptive bicycles. Without fundraisers like this, it wouldn’t be possible.”

The generosity seemed to come naturally for everyone involved in the event. Among attendees was the voice of the Chiefs, Mitch Holthus, who made note of that generosity.

“What I love is when I see so many volunteers engage, and this takes a lot,” Holthus said. “It’s this confluence of people with good hearts, a lot of talent, and a lot of energy to go into one great cause.”

Officials with Hy-Vee, the event’s sponsor, detailed witnessing that kindness.

“It’s awesome to be able to see our partners at Hy-Vee come together with the community and just see the wins,” Hy-Vee District store director Luke Long said.
