Police search for man accused of using company funds to pay living expenses

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A warrant has been issued for the arrest of a man accused of moving his family into a foreign student’s vacant apartment and using company funds to pay their living expenses.

Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Tuesday, June 10, indicate that Paul R. May, 63, of Kansas City, has been charged in connection with an investigation that found he paid for unauthorized living expenses with a company card.

A probable cause statement filed by the Kansas City Police Department revealed that in September 2023, law enforcement officials were ed by a victim who reported May, an employee, had used the company credit card for more than $27,000 in unauthorized expenses.

As part of May’s job, it was reported that he was responsible for the housing arrangements of foreign students studying in the metro. It was found that he moved his family into an apartment recently vacated by a student and replaced the names on the lease.

The investigation found that May used a company card to pay for rent, utilities and furniture rentals between September 2022 and September 2023.

During an interview with investigators, they said May itted his family had been living in the unit and claimed that the rent, utility and furniture rental payments were all paid by the company in mistake. He also itted he had been fired due to the embezzlement.

As a result, May was charged on June 10, 2025, with stealing more than $25,000 - a crime for which he could be sentenced to spend up to 10 years behind bars. He could also be ordered to pay a fine of up to $20,000.

Court documents revealed that a warrant was issued for May’s arrest on Tuesday, with the condition of a $25,000 bond allowed. As of Wednesday afternoon, he does not appear to be behind bars.

A court appearance has not yet been set in the case. No further information has been released.
