WASHINGTON, D.C. (KCTV) - Transportation leaders have called for an investigation into the Army and FAA’s adherence to federal guidelines following a fatal mid-air collision.

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) announced on Tuesday, June 10, that as the Chairman of the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Aviation, Space and Innovation, he ed transportation leaders to call on the Acting Inspectors General of the Department of Transportation and Department of the Army to request new audits.

“Following the horrific accident at DCA that claimed 67 lives and the subsequent discovery of known safety gaps, we request that the Inspector General of the Department of the Army and the Acting Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Transportation initiate concurrent audits investigating the concerns noted below,” the senators wrote.

Sen. Moran noted that the audits were requested in response to the Jan. 29 mid-air collision of a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter and American Airlines Flight 5342 near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

Moran indicated that the request also follows ongoing coordination issues between the Army and DCA air traffic control.

The Senators requested an evaluation of the Federal Aviation istration’s management of the DCA airspace, as well as whether the FAA’s decisions contributed to the accident.

Lastly, the senators called for a review of the Army’s coordination with the FAA, pilot training and qualification standards and its policy on ADS-B equipage, usage and action.
