BROOKFIELD, Mo. (KCTV) - A Missouri man is behind bars after he called police to report that he was shot at during a drug deal gone wrong, but was allegedly found to have been behind himself.

Linn County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on Monday, June 9, indicate that Chase M. Barnes, 21, of Brookfield, has been charged in connection with an early-morning shooting.

A probable cause statement filed by the Brookfield Police Department revealed that on Monday, law enforcement officials were called with reports of a possible shooting. When they arrived at the crime scene, they found Barnes, who flagged them down and led them to his pickup truck.

Investigators noted that on the hood of the pickup, they spotted a box of ammunition as well as a firearm. A bullet hole was also spotted on the driver’s side door near two spent shell casings.

As a result, law enforcement officials said Barnes was taken into custody. During his arrest, he told investigators he had been at the Brookfield City Lake to buy marijuana from someone he did not know. However, the individuals allegedly attempted to rob him and fired a gun during the process. He claimed to fire two rounds in response.

Court documents indicated that Barnes has been charged with unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action for firing a gun from his pickup. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.

An arraignment has been scheduled for 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday, June 10. As of Monday afternoon, Barnes remains behind bars on a $5,000 bond. No further information has been released.
