Structural engineer says Sedalia building is in ‘state of collapse’
SEDALIA, Mo. (KCTV) - A structural engineer labeled a building on Main Street in Sedalia as “in a state of collapse,” this week, city officials said.
As a result, the City of Sedalia said it “will require immediate and extreme repairs to be stabilized; otherwise, demolition will be necessary.” Sedalia city officials said based on the engineer’s professional assessment and the severity of conditions, the city intends to pursue a court order for demolition.
City officials said the building, located at 207 W. Main Street, is vacant. However, the engineer said a collapse would “likely result in debris being propelled outward, creating a significant safety hazard for adjacent structures and public spaces.”

Because of those potential dangers, the eastbound lane of Main Street remains closed.
On Wednesday, the city said Liberty Utilities had capped the gas lines at the street level of the building. That critical safety step, officials said, eliminates the possibility of residual or pressurized gas entering the area and removes a significant fire or explosion risk to surrounding buildings.
A full report of the engineer’s findings is expected to be shared within days, the city said on Wednesday, June 4, in a post to the city’s Facebook page.
