Independence man accused of rape after investigators given recording

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - An Independence man has been accused of rape after a recording of the incident revealed the past sexual assault to investigators.

Jackson County, Missouri, Circuit Court records filed on May 27, 2025, indicate that Jerry W. Fleming, 33, of Independence, has been charged with rape.

A probable cause statement filed by the Independence Police Department revealed that on March 16, law enforcement officials were ed by a victim who reported that a rape had taken place on April 24, 2024. The victim explained that she delayed the report out of fear of retaliation.

Investigators said they found that a recording of the incident had been taken. The victim further reported that Fleming sexually assaulted her in her bedroom as she pleaded for him to stop.

Law enforcement officials said they reviewed the recording, which corroborated the victim’s line of events. On May 21, 2025, a person of interest bulletin was issued for Fleming. He was taken into custody a few days later.

As a result, court documents indicatd that Fleming was charged with a single count of rape in the second degree. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 7 years in prison and be ordered to pay a fine of up to $10,000.

As of Thursday, June 5, Fleming no longer remains behind bars as his $25,000 bond has been posted. A preliminary hearing has been set for 10:30 a.m. on June 23. No further information has been released.
