PETERSBURG, Va. (WWBT/Gray News) - A 12-year-old in Virginia is being praised after jumping into action to save his family during a massive house fire.

Fire officials in Petersburg said Ramir was upstairs with his grandmother Tuesday when he heard a crackling sound.

Ramir then saw black smoke and yelled, “Fire!”

Before escaping from the house, the 12-year-old ran into the smoke to grab his little brothers, who are just 1 and 2 years old.

“Ramir saved lives today. His quick thinking and selfless bravery are nothing short of heroic. In a moment where seconds mattered, he stepped up just like a firefighter would. Just like a protector does,” Petersburg Fire officials said.

Authorities confirmed that everyone made it safely out of the house, largely thanks to the heroic actions of Ramir.
