Independence police report bike rider hit by car while crossing U.S. Route 24
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - The Independence Police Department says a stretch of highway has reopened after a bike rider was hit by a car Tuesday night.
Officers were called to U.S. Route 24 at Dover Drive around 7:33 p.m. on May 20.
According to a report, a 19-year-old on a bicycle tried to cross US-24 from Dover Drive in the south to Concord Circle in the north, but was hit by a Ford Focus headed west. Independence police said the cyclist was not wearing any safety equipment and sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Their identity has not been released.
The driver of the Ford Focus stopped and stayed on scene to cooperate with police.
There is a traffic light at the intersection, but IPD did not state whether the driver or the cyclist had the right of way when the crash occurred.
US-24 was closed for about an hour to process the scene, but it has since fully reopened. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
