INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - The Independence School District will be searching for a new leader soon. On Tuesday, ISD Superintendent Dr. Dale Herl announced his retirement.

Herl will be retiring from his position on June 30, 2025. He’ll leave following 16 years of service in the district, which includes the last 12 years as the superintendent.

ISD said Herl has agreed to remain with the district in a transitional capacity through the end of June 2026. He’ll serve as a financial analyst for the year, “providing financial guidance and strategic insight during the leadership transition process,” ISD said.

KCTV5's Janae' Hancock has the top headlines for the afternoon of May 20, 2025.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together and grateful for the opportunity to serve this community,” Herl said in a statement released Tuesday. “As I step into this next chapter, I’m excited to spend more time with my family -- especially as I have two children competing in college athletics next year and another son playing professional football overseas.”

The district said more information about an interim superintendent search will be shared in the coming weeks.
