KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - It’s your chance to eat like a champion and represent the state of Kansas on the Fourth of July in New York.

The qualifier for the Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest will stop in Shawnee during Old Shawnee Days next month.

The top male and female finishers in the event will qualify for the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. The event is held every Fourth of July.

The contestants representing Kansas will compete against other competitive eaters from around the globe.

“Nathan’s Famous is traveling the nation seeking athletes to represent the United States in the July Fourth holiday celebration,” Phil McCann, Vice President of Marketing at Nathan’s Famous, said. “The Independence Day contest is a tradition like none other.”

The contestants will have to take a bite out of the competition. Last year, after Joey Chestnut was banned, Pat Bertoletti of Chicago ate 58 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes.

Miki Sudo of Port Richey, Fla., became the 10-time female champion when she ate 51 hot dogs and buns in the same time.

“We are waiting for the next great champion to emerge. Who will seize this moment and punch their ticket to Coney Island?” Sam Barclay, emcee at Major League Eating, said.

People interested in bellying up to the competition should plan on attending the Old Shawnee Days Festival on Saturday, June 7. The festival is held at 11600 Johnson Dr. The eating competition is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
