KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards are considered among the most respected awards in broadcast and digital news. The organization released its winners for Region 5 Friday morning, which includes Kansas City.

KCTV5 earned awards for Newscast and Sports Reporting. The awards are presented to the station, not individuals.

Newscast: The Aftermath at Union Station (10 p.m.)

This was our 10 p.m. newscast from the day of the Kansas City Chiefs championship rally, where just moments after the Super Bowl parade ended, more than 20 people were shot and one person was killed just outside Union Station. The KCTV5 team covered the breaking news extensively from 2-7 p.m. that day in wall-to-wall coverage, and then came back for the newscast at 10 p.m. The goal of this newscast was not only to give the latest information on what happened that day, but to tell stories of heroism.

Sports Reporting: The Lasting Impact of CTE

This is a story about the growing number of children being diagnosed with CTE, or Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. It is a disease associated with high- sports that is usually reserved for professional athletes or, at the very least, athletes who have taken extensive hits over several years. However, a new study shows that more and more kids are being diagnosed with the disease that can only be found postmortem. KCTV5 investigative reporter Angie Ricono found a local family who lost their son to suicide after documenting on his phone his struggles with depression and other brain-related issues. This emotional, yet important investigation brought to light the very danger every family and child faces when they choose a sport.

Wyatt Bramwell, who played varsity all four years for Pleasant Hill High School, died by suicide at the age of 18 years old.

The Radio Television Digital News Association has been recognizing outstanding achievements in journalism for more than 50 years.

Regional winners advance to the national competition. Those winners are announced in August.
