Missouri lawmaker uses personal experience to push for infertility awareness
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - As the Trump istration mulls ways to increase fertility in the United States, lawmakers in Missouri are considering awareness tactics.
Infertility is now a national conversation as the Trump istration pushes for a “baby boom.” Missouri lawmakers are getting in on that conversation on Tuesday. One Missouri lawmaker is sharing his family’s journey with infertility in hopes of starting a conversation that could help many.
One in six people experience infertility, according to the World Health Organization. Rep. Marty Joe Murray and his wife Danielle Faith are included in that number. Faith started Making a Miracle after the couple experienced hardships conceiving. Tuesday, they shared their story at the Missouri Capitol to encourage lawmakers to a bill officially recognizing the last full week of April as Infertility Awareness Week.
“We need to change the narrative, and also let people know how to deal with infertility and also how to somebody going through it,” Faith said.
Murray’s bill is very early in the process. With less than three weeks left in the legislative session, it will be tough to get it to the governor in time, but he does have a lot of from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
The hope is to help those struggling alone find community and resources while educating everyone on how to people experiencing infertility.
Republican lawmakers agreed to help with the bill if Murray added a piece encouraging more research on the causes of infertility.
“The root causes piece is what I really wanted to hammer on because that was life-saving for us. Once we got to the root cause of our struggle, then we were able to conceive,” said Eldridge Republican Rep. Melissa Schmidt.
The Trump istration is encouraging people to have more babies, entertaining policies like a $5,000 baby bonus. Murray said he’s encouraged by the conversation, although skeptical of the methods.
“The conversations at the national level, the conversations that we’re starting to have at the local level, I’m encouraged,” Murray said.
