KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Kansas City authorities are showing that what “tows” around comes around as they take the next steps to crack down on predatory towing.

The Kansas City Police Department posted that as part of an ongoing property crimes investigation, detectives had several tow trucks towed on April 25. The vehicles are suspected of being used for illegal, predatory towing practices across Kansas City.

KD did not specify how many trucks were towed or who they belonged to, but said “charges are possible.”

“We wanted the public to know that we’re hearing them on these issues and we’re being responsive,” said Captain Jake Becchina. “These investigations are ongoing.”

This comes as owners of Metro Tow, a Kansas City company, are in Jackson County custody on several charges related to alleged illegal towing.

Soon after charges were brought by both Jackson and Platte County prosecutors, KD asked the community to email detectives if they had been victims of predatory towing companies at [email protected].

“Those investigators have received well over 100 emails by this point in time,” said Becchina. “Not saying every single one of those emails is a for sure indication, but it is definitely an indication that there is an issue. We want to be responsive to those types of issues.”

Becchina says the department continues to encourage people to reach out to them with their stories.

“We want people to not be taken advantage of by improper towing procedures,” said Becchina. “The reputable, hardworking tow drivers also want that.”

Jackson County legislators are expected to spend part of Monday, April 28, discussing possible regulations and penalties for tow truck drivers going forward. Some of their proposals include requiring a business license and valid insurance, as well as imposing suspensions or fines on a towing company if they are found to violate any rules.
