LEXINGTON, Mo. (KCTV) - Gas restoration plans have been detailed for the City of Lexington after a deadly gas explosion took the life of a child and sent two others to Kansas City hospitals.

The City of Lexington, Missouri, announced on Saturday, April 12, that dozens of operations and safety team from Liberty Gas continue service restoration to residents. Crews are expected to work throughout the day and late into the evening.

Utility leaders noted that the restoration will take place in 3 phases. As of 1 p.m., restoration was underway to those in service areas 1 and 2. Once work in both those areas has been completed, crews will move to area 3.

Currently, city officials indicated that restoration work is anticipated to continue through Monday. As a reminder, to complete this work, crews will need to go from home to home to turn on gas meters. They will then need to come inside to perform a safety check of natural gas appliances.

If residents are not home when crews arrive to restore service, they will leave a tag at the door with a phone number to call and schedule a follow-up. For the safety of the community, if anyone smells gas, they should leave the area immediately and call 911 or the gas emergency line at 1-800-406-9220.

The efforts follow a deadly gas explosion on Wednesday, April 9, that took the life of 5-year-old Alistair Cunningham. His father, Jacob, and 10-year-old sister, Cami, were airlifted to Kansas City hospitals with critical injuries. The explosion was caused by a gas leak after a subcontractor at a nearby construction site hit a gas line.

Crews said they would like to thank the Lexington community for its patience, kindness and words of encouragement. Family have organized a GoFundMe campaign to Jacob and Cami as they recover from their own injuries and mourn the loss of Alistair.

No further information has been released.
