KCK neighbors duck for cover as bullets fly into home amid gang shooting
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Residents had to hit the floor as bullets flew through their homes Wednesday night near the intersection of Ridge Avenue and 16th Street.
When police arrived about 9 p.m., they found three men, one inside a car and two in the street, all with gunshot wounds. They were taken to the hospital, and one remained in critical condition.
Nancy Chartrand with KCKPD said the shooting involved two groups of people, and the suspects fired more than 100 rounds.
“This is not a common everyday occurrence in our neighborhood. In fact, it’s very out of the ordinary,” Chartrand said. “What isn’t out of the ordinary is the fact that these types of incidents don’t just happen overnight. This was not random.”

Some of those bullets flew through one woman’s home, who asked to remain anonymous but told KCTV5 she was on the couch watching TV when she heard the first few shots.
“We kind of assumed it was normal because we hear it a lot out here. But then I looked out the window, and we could see people in the street firing rounds like crazy,” she recalled. “We got on the ground with our dogs and crawled to our bedroom, and then gunshots started going through our house.”
She called 911 and waited for the police to arrive, which she said was within minutes. She then walked out of her room to see destruction everywhere.
“Probably about 30 bullet holes around my house, and we’ve found six bullets so far and lots of broken glass,” she said.

Across the street, several houses down, a bullet flew through Monica Soto’s house.
“My parents were upstairs, I’m in the basement, and we all just hit the ground,” Soto said. “It was just really scary. We’ve never had a shooting that close. This was bad, whatever caused this was bad.”
Chartrand said KCKPD is increasing patrols in the area. The department also encouraged residents to be aware of their surroundings. If you see something, call, no matter how small of a situation you think it is.
“If anybody saw anything, if you think someone you know is involved, or if you are involved in this, now is the time to come forward and tell your story so that we can do our job and make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Chartrand said.
This incident is under investigation by the KCKPD Major Case Unit. Anyone with information on this case is urged to call the Crime Stoppers TIPS hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477) or online at KCcrimestoppers.com.
