Missouri man charged following chase, police shooting on Kansas City’s eastside
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Prosecutors charged a Missouri man who was shot and injured by Kansas City police Friday afternoon.
Steven Dockins, of Merriam Woods, is charged with the following crimes:
- Unlawful possession of a firearm
- First-degree tampering with a motor vehicle
- Resisting a lawful stop
According to a probable cause statement, police tried to stop Dockins on a traffic violation near Indiana Avenue and Independence Avenue on March 21. Officers said Dockins kept refused to stop. The officers continued to follow Dockins after they determined the car he drove had been reported stolen.
As Dockins tried to escape police officers reported that he ran at least one red light, drove in the wrong lanes of traffic and nearly hit a semi truck, according to the court document.
Dockins pulled the car into an alley near 11th and Prospect and stopped. He got out of the stolen car with a bag, according to the probable cause statement.
A witness reported Dockins tried to run away with a gun in one hand and the bag in the other. The probable cause statement shows that shots were fired and a K9 bit Dockins.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting.
Friday, the patrol said a Kansas City police officer shot at Dockins at 5:02 p.m. Dockins was injured, but is expected to recover.
Dockins' record shows he has been convicted of eight different crimes over the past 20 years. Due to the convictions it is illegal for Dockins to have a gun.
