KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - Interstate 70 was closed for several hours Friday afternoon as a large law enforcement presence blocked the area.
According to a release from the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI), the incident started around 3:30 p.m. on March 21 on eastbound I-70 at 7th Street.
Troopers with the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) pulled over a driver with the intent to serve an arrest warrant. During the stop, troopers gave the man verbal commands to exit his vehicle. The man did not comply, however, and died by suicide in the vehicle. The troopers gave the man medical aid until emergency services arrived but he was declared dead at the scene.
A child was recovered unharmed from the backseat of the vehicle and reunited with family .
While law enforcement remained on the scene, I-70 was closed and traffic was diverted to I-670. The roadway has since fully reopened.
KBI noted that KHP troopers did not fire any shots during the incident. However, it remains under investigation as a part of the standard use of force protocol. Any further updates to this case will be released to the public as they become available.
