Kansas City restaurant adds egg surcharge for customers to help battle high prices
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The owner of a Kansas City restaurant made a tough decision and followed the lead of some popular chains.
Scott Downey, Jr. owns “The Restaurant KC.” He made the decision to implement a surcharge because egg prices are record highs according to the latest Consumer Price Index.
In January, a dozen eggs cost an average of nearly $5. That compares to a year ago when shoppers paid about half that, or $2.50 a dozen.
Downey said he used to pay $18 for a case of eggs. He’s now paying $118 a case.
The Restaurant KC owner said he had no other choice but to some of the cost on to his customers.
“A lot of places just can’t even deal with it. They just close their doors. I mean, we were on the verge, so that’s why we decided to go with this and see if that helps or not,” Downey said.
He said that so far customers have been understanding about the $.50 surcharge.
Downey just wants to see egg prices decline and regulate. That’s not something that will likely happen quickly.
Egg producers and most industry experts said the ongoing bird flu outbreak is the main reason for the high prices. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a $1 billion strategy to curb bird flu.
