Kansas City mayor pitches idea to help laid off federal workers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Dozens of former federal workers woke up Friday morning in Kansas City with uncertain futures.

Cuts from the IRS and other agencies are impacting hundreds of people. More cuts and layoffs are expected, according to President Trump’s federal spending reduction.

As former federal workers contemplate the next chapter in their careers, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas is asking for their help.

“Kansas City is proud to have thousands of outstanding federal workers here. We’d be honored if you considered staying in public service,” Lucas shared on X.

Lucas also shared a link to Work for America’s Civic Match. The nonprofit says it works to match qualified job seekers with government staffing in communities across the country.

City leaders say they plan to list openings on the city’s website. The mayor’s office said Lucas is also working to labor organizations to host job fairs in the near future.

The president of the union that represents IRS workers in Kansas City said more than 6,000 workers across the country were expected to be laid off.

Hundreds of TSA workers have also lost their jobs, as well as the National Institutes of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have also lost workers.
