Security tightens in New Orleans ahead of Super Bowl LIX
City implements safety measures across the Superdome, French Quarter, and CBD as visitors flood in.
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Security preparations are ramping up across New Orleans as the city prepares to host Super Bowl LIX.
With thousands of visitors expected, local and federal agencies are working together to harden security around key areas, including the French Quarter and the Superdome.
Fencing, tents, and additional surveillance cameras are being installed on Poydras Street near the Superdome. New steel wedges have been positioned at key entry points off Bourbon Street to improve pedestrian safety.
NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick says planning for Super Bowl security began 18 months ago, long before the recent terror attack on Bourbon Street.
NFL Security is the lead agency for the event, working in tandem with local law enforcement.
“We will have multiple tactical teams, multiple undercover officers. We will spread them out in the Dome, the exterior of the Dome, the French Quarter, and the CBD,” said Hans Ganthier, NOPD’s Chief Deputy Superintendent of the Field Operations Bureau.

Beyond the immediate preparations for the Super Bowl, Kirkpatrick says the city is looking at long-term plans to enhance safety.
Renowned security expert Bill Bratton and his team at Teneo have been studying the French Quarter and are set to present recommendations to ensure ongoing safety for events like Mardi Gras and beyond.
One of the proposals under consideration is fortifying the French Quarter by making Bourbon Street a pedestrian-only zone. Before any final decisions are made, Kirkpatrick will meet with business owners and host community forums to gather input.
