Shirtless Jason Kelce was a brief internet sensation, but there may not be a do-over this year
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Just over a year ago, an imioned Jason Kelce ripped off his shirt and roared as his brother, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, made a touchdown catch.
It was the Chiefs-Buffalo Bills NFL divisional round playoff game on Sunday, Jan. 21, 2024, in Orchard Park, NY and the Chiefs were trailing the Bills 6-10 in the second quarter.
Travis Kelce’s catch, a 22-yard from Patrick Mahomes combined with another Butker kick, put them ahead 13-10. The game later ended 27-24 Chiefs, sending them onto an ultimate AFC Championship and Super Bowl win.
The moment of the evening, however, was Jason Kelce’s dramatic celebration. He later confessed on his and Travis Kelce’s podcast– New Heights– that he was planning to take his shirt off in the box since he wasn’t able to during the tailgate.
“I’m not going to lie, I gave Kylie a heads-up. The moment we got into the suite I said ‘I’m taking my shirt off and jumping out of the suite’ and she said ‘Jason, don’t you dare,’” Jason said. “I just said ‘I’m just letting you know what’s going to happen, I’m not asking for permission.’”
The moment caught the attention of businesses both in Kansas City and across the country. Shirtless Jason artwork, t-shirts, cookie cakes and other products flooded the market for weeks afterward.
There may not be an opportunity to repeat the viral celebration, however, during the Chiefs-Bills AFC Championship game.
Jason Kelce, a former center for the Philadelphia Eagles, will be working for ESPN at his former team’s NFC Championship game against the Washington Commanders. The game starts at 2:00 p.m. in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field.
“I want to be there for the Eagles, but I also want to be there for my brother,” Jason Kelce said during his show, “They Call It Late Night with Jason Kelce.”
“I don’t know how many more he has. We’re kind of flying by the seat of our pants. We might be able to see both of us here again, hopefully,” he continued.
The possibility of Jason Kelce making it to both games hasn’t been ruled out entirely. Fans will just have to wait and see if he’s able to make an appearance and make as big of an impact as last year.
