Chiefs turn to AFC Championship Game tradition, name Clark Hunt drum honoree

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Chiefs turn to a familiar face to rally the team, and thousands fans, for the AFC Championship Game Sunday afternoon.

Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt will serve as drum honoree for the playoff game.

It’s an AFC Championship tradition for the Chiefs. Hunt has served as the drum honoree in the last five AFC Championship games at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Thursday, Jan. 23, that fans present at Sunday’s AFC Championship game will get to enjoy a halftime performance from country music duo Big and Rich. Big Kenny and John Rich are expected to perform a medley of their songs.

The Chiefs also indicated that retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Generald Wilson will perform the national anthem as the Kansas City Fire Department presents the colors. A fleet of B-2 Spirits out of Whiteman Air Force Base will also fly over the stadium.

The Chiefs are set to take on the Buffalo Bills at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 26, at Arrowhead Stadium for the Lamar Hunt Trophy. During the game, fans can cheer on the Chiefs with their smartphones to create a light show during player introductions, presented by Hy-Vee. To participate fans should:

  • the Chiefs app on a smartphone
  • During player introductions and at the end of the third quarter, open the app and tap “ the light show”
  • Make sure microphone and camera access are enabled

Parking lots are set to open at 1 p.m. with gates expected to open at 3:30. Fans have been warned to stay warm and prepare for the game with the following tips:

  • Stop by a warming station
    • Exterior - Warming trailers will be available on the medians between lots C & D, lots F & G and at the southwest corner of lot A.
    • Interior - Nine warming stations will be located on the inside of the stadium when gates open:
      • At the bottom of each of the four Field Level spirals
      • Near the Jim Beam and Crown Royal bars located on the Upper Level
      • Near the Red Zones on the east and west sides of the Upper Level
      • At Champions Tailgate north located on the Plaza Level near the T-Mobile Gate
  • Bundle up with loose-fitting layers and cover all exposed skin
    • Fans are allowed to carry blankets without zippers or compartments, draped over their shoulder during the security process. Cardboard no larger than 3’x5′ and portable charges and non-dry cell batteries to power heated apparel will be allowed. Battery packs must be disconnected during security inspection, may not have damage or imperfections and can not use power adapters or other wiring modifications. Fans who need additional layers on site can visit the Prop Shop locations which are expected to be stocked full of warm apparel.
  • Stay hydrated
    • All guests can bring a factory-sealed bottle of water, 20 ounces or less. Hot chocolate will also be available at all Chiefs Bar, Tailgater, Burger Kitchen, Cowtown and Sheridan’s locations on the Field and Upper Levels.
