KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - It’s a project about to bring Kansas City together like never before, but first, additional funding is required.

The South Loop Project is a sustainable urban park over four blocks of I-670 meant to link Kansas City’s Central Business District and the Crossroads Arts District with accessible play spaces, a dog park, public art, and more.

But before the transformation can begin, J.E. Dunn, the lead construction team on the project, says it plans to ask Jackson County to chip in another $15 Million.

The project includes capping the south loop over U.S. Interstate 670 from Wyandotte Street to Grand Boulevard and building a 5.5-acre multi-use park above.

The $200 Million project is financed with both public tax dollars and private donations.

“The city has agreed with MoDOT to take on the operations of everything underneath. Then atop you’ll have green space, you’ll have park equipment, you’ll have pavilions and all these other amenities,” said VP, J.E. Dunn Construction Richard Martin.

If Jackson County agrees to chip in, construction could begin in Spring 2025.
