WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - A 27-year-old man is dead after an officer-involved shooting Saturday morning.

It happened outside Wichita city limits on Childs Street off Ridge Road.

Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office Colonel Keith Allen said a man called 911 around 7:15 am, threatening to shoot someone in the area of 6900 Childs Street.

When deputies and officers from multiple departments arrived, they found a man in the front yard of a home wearing ballistic armor. Colonel Allen said for an hour, officers and deputies tried to de-escalate the situation as the man went in and out of a car he was driving up and down the street.

Colonel Allen said at around 8:15 a.m., the man came out of the car and charged at officers and deputies. He said they shot at the suspect. Life-saving measures were tried, but he died at the scene.

Colonel Allen couldn’t say if the man was armed at the time officers and deputies shot him, but that will be part of the investigation.

The agencies on scene were the Kansas Highway Patrol, Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Maize Police Department and Valley Center Police Department.

The Wichita Police Department is handling the investigation of the officer-involved shooting.
