KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - While the Royals are trying to get postseason hits on the diamond, a Blue Springs man thinks he’s written one off it. Duane Bierwirth is a retired middle school guidance counselor, and he turned the Royals’ signature catchphrase into a song for Kansas City.

“I hear Bobby Witt, Jr., say ‘The boys are playing some ball,’ and I thought, ‘That’s it! That’s my hook!’”

Bierwirth says he was inspired to write the song by his wife. In April, he was looking for a theme – and then Bobby Witt coined his now iconic line after a team win. Suddenly, Bierwirth had the makings of a song.

“It just kind of evolved,” Bierwirth said. “I’d say it took about six weeks after I got the first inspiration. Then you get one verse, then you think, then all of a sudden you get an idea and it’s the second verse. Sometimes, it comes to you in the middle of the night, so you have to get up and write it down before you forget.”

Bierwirth says he also wrote a song in 1985 about the Royals and one last year about the Chiefs. According to his personal stat book, he is now two for two in turning songs into championships. He’s hopeful for a third.

“I’m hoping for the trifecta,” Bierwirth said. “I would love to see lightning strike three times and see them go all the way.”

Bierwirth isn’t sure if the Royals have heard his song, but he hopes to hear it played at the K one day.

“That’s my fondest hope,” he said. “I can just hear a stadium full of people chiming in after the verse is sung, ‘The boys are playing some ball!’”
