OVERLAND PARK, Mo. (KCTV) - Firefighters plan to hit the streets to make sure people have access to a simple device that can save lives.

Overland Park firefighters responded to a fire at the London Square Apartments near Robinson Street and Shawnee Mission Parkway earlier this month.

Investigators determined that at least three apartments damaged in the fire did not have working smoke detectors. The apartments are privately owned which means residents are responsible for maintaining their own alarms.

Due to the findings, Overland Park firefighters plan to go door to door at the complex Wednesday morning.

Firefighters will offer to check every smoke alarm in the complex. Residents will be offered free smoke alarms if the ones in their apartments don’t work.
