KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - A Catholic church said it is determined to right what vandals wronged.

Worshipers arrived at Saint Anthony Catholic Church on Benton Boulevard Sunday to find a mess.

Vandals damaged the parish’s prayer garden and “beheaded and committed sacrilege” to the Virgin Mary statue that stood outside the church.

of the parish believe the vandalism happened around 2 a.m. Sunday morning.

Pictures shared by Saint Anthony’s Parish show the extent of the damage the vandals left behind.

“We are sad that someone came last night and vandalized the prayer garden and beheaded and committed sacrilege the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Tristes estamos que alguien vino a media noche y vandalizó y cometió sacrilegio al descabezar la imagen de la Virgen María,” the church said in a statement.

The parish said there are plans to repair the damage and restore the prayer garden so the community can continue to enjoy it.
