Family of man hit, killed in Clay County last year continues searching for answers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - The family of John Paul Scheidecker wants justice and closure after a year has ed since they learned of his mysterious death.
John Paul Scheidecker was July 30, 2023, at the age of 30. He exited his truck on Northeast 120th Street in rural Clay County and investigators continue to believe the person most likely fled from the scene.

“Our world has flipped upside down,” said Scheidecker’s brother, Luke.
No one knows why he stepped out of his vehicle, but his family said he was a generous person, so they wouldn’t be shocked to learn he was helping someone or perhaps hit an animal and was checking on it—That’s the positive thought.
“Somebody step up and do the right thing. Somebody knows something, right, and we’re just hoping to gain answers,” said Luke Scheidecker. “Through our conversations with the detectives, it’s going to take one tip, one tip is going to change the outcome of this case and get some clarity for everyone and justice for him.”
The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has looked into several leads, but nothing is sticking.
“Even up to yesterday, we have been speaking with people following leads in this case. We have a lead that has led us out of state, we are still following up on that case,” Sergeant Chris Johnson said.

Johnson said there are no cameras in the actual area of the crash, but there are cameras scattered throughout the area that they are looking into.
“Due to the location, due to what was left at the scene, the evidence is very minimal,” said Johnson.
Anyone with information about the incident should report it to the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS. The Clay Co. Sheriff’s Office said there is now a $7,000 reward for more information surrounding this case.
