LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) - With the Kansas Jayhawks set to play home football games off-campus this season, the athletic department is working to provide students with free transportation to and from games.

KU Athletics announced Wednesday that it would provide “safe and seamless” transportation for students hoping to attend games at Children’s Mercy Park and GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The transportation will be provided as KU continues renovations to David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

“With the continued momentum and trajectory for Kansas Football, it is critical that we create the very best homefield advantage this fall in Kansas City,” said KU athletic director Travis Goff. “Over the past couple of seasons, our students have risen to the occasion and their attendance and ion will make an even greater difference this fall. This well thought out and robust busing program provides a safe and efficient option for students to attend our games in full force.”

Students can and reserve their seats on buses on a first-come, first-served basis through the CORQ campus events app or Rock Chalk Central. Once students they can pick a pick-up location and time that works best for them.

KU Athletics said the first wave of buses will leave approximately three hours before kickoff. At each venue during the two games in Kansas City, Kansas, and four games in Kansas City, Missouri, KU will provide free food for students on a first-come, first-served basis.

“We are challenging our student body to make a strong statement of while also enjoying a one-of-a-kind chance to cheer on their Jayhawks in two iconic Kansas City venues,” Goff said, noting the athletic department’s goal is to provide transportation for at least 1,000 students per game.

Goff said that goal could fluctuate depending on student demand, as well as bus and bus drive availability.

KU’s unusual home football setup comes during a season where the Jayhawks are one of the leading candidates to win the Big 12.

The Jayhawks first game of the season is Thursday, Aug. 29, 2024, at 7 p.m. CT. They’ll host Lindenwood at Children’s Mercy Park.
