Child sex crimes: Former Olathe School paraprofessional charged
OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) - A former Olathe School District paraprofessional is in court Thursday afternoon on charges of child sex crimes with a kid between 14 and 16 years old.
Jason Barrett, 42, is charged with aggravated indecent liberties with child touching and furnishing alcohol to a minor from an alleged incident in September of 2023 involving the same victim. That’s four months after Barrett’s departure from the Olathe District. The district stressed Barrett’s leaving was unrelated to these current charges against him.
Jason Barrett worked as a Special Education Paraprofessional in Olathe from 2003 to 2005 and again in August 2009 to May 2023.
Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe says there are concerns this alleged incident was not the only time. Howe said there has been a significant rise in cases involving educators involved in inappropriate with minors over the last five years.
“It has been a growing problem, unfortunately,” said Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe.
As the investigation continues in this case, it is believed there are likely more victims.
Barrett is currently being held on $250,000 bond.
