KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Putting a cap on the south loop over U.S. Interstate 670, between Wyandotte and Oak/Locust Street will take longer to complete than initially thought.

The goal is still to have the section just west of Bartle Hall and just north of the Loews Hotel open before the 2026 World Cup arrives in Kansas City.

To get ready for that Mayor Quinton Lucas said the plan is to break ground in the Spring of 2025.

“I am looking forward to standing at Bartle Hall and to be able to look out at a park,” Lucas said. “This will continue to sell this as a convention town – we’ll keep getting great big events, and that’s something I think is going to be great for all of us.”

Lucas was the sponsor behind $28.6 million in funding from the Missouri Department of Economic Development in a City Council Finance, Governance and Public Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday.

Those funds take the project more than halfway towards its current funding goal of $217 million.

“You would look probably no faster than 2028 for that full build out to places like Oak Street and even if you go a little further to Locust (Street),” Lucas said.
