KC Mavericks make history as Mountain Division Champions
INDEPENDENCE, Mo. (KCTV) - The Kansas City Mavericks are making history as first-ever Mountain Division Champs and the ECHL’s team to beat.
The Kansas City Mavericks officials announced on Friday, March 29, that for the first time in the team’s history, they are Mountain Division Champions. This is the team’s second total division title in their ECHL history after they took home the banner in the Central Division in the 2015-16 season.
The Mavs took the ice on Friday night with the need to beat Iowa Heartlanders in their home barn and have Idaho lose in regulation. Both happened. Kansas City defeated Iowa 4-2 and the Utah Grizzlies topped the Steelheads 5-4.
Kansas City was led by two goals gals from rookie Bradley Schoonbaert and one each from Jeremy McKenna and Jacob Hayhurst. This counts as Hayhurst’s 30th goal fo the season.
In the midst of the best season in franchise history, the Mavericks said they are 48-11-4-2 with 102 points. They have been the team to beat in this league the entire season and have set multiple team and individual records - with more scheduled to fall in the remaining seven regular season games.
Kansas City has announced that games 1 and 2 of the Mountain Division Semifinals will be played on April 17 and 18 at Cable Damer Arena at 7 p.m. Tickets can be found HERE.
