KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) - Tributes to how special of a person Lisa Lopez-Galvan was are taking shape all over Kansas City.

The KC Hispanic News published a special edition of the newspaper that gives insight to the KKFI DJ. The paper is in both English and Spanish, and publisher Joe Arce it allows more readers to understand what they have lost.

“We’ve never done anything like this, where we dedicate 95 percent of the paper to one individual,” Arce said. “Her story needs to be told.”

Back in November Arce wrote an article on Lopez-Galvan and her relationship with her father, a mariachi musician.

As a teenager she didn’t like mariachi music, but I didn’t like mariachi music as a teenager either, but then she learned to love the music, because her father not only taught her the words – he talked about the culture,” Arce said. “Looking back at this now, the tribute that was for her dad, I’m honored she asked me… Because so often as adults, sometimes we don’t tell our parents how much we love them, how much they influenced us.”

Through mariachi music she also gained a love for Tejano music, and the Westside community she grew up in is looking to honor that connection, and their connection to Lopez-Galvan.

Luis Ramirez owns La Plaza Tattoo and Art Gallery, just off of Southwest Boulevard on the westside of KC. The shop is planning to put a mural on the side of their building of Lopez-Galvan.

“We’re gonna have all of us here working and anybody in the community that wants to come down here and help us – come on down,” Ramirez said. “My manager (Melissa) is like a sister (to Lisa) she grew up with her… trying to keep her, how do you say, presence still here in the Westside community.”

Melissa Mendez-Marron is the general manager of La Plaza and grew up with Lopez-Galvan on 26th and Madison.

“She wasn’t just any person, she wasn’t just any mother – she was a pillar of the community,” Mendez-Marron said. “It’s gonna be a beautiful mural – it’s her doing what she loved doing, DJing, showing her heritage with her Tejada hat.”
